What is Direct Marketing?
Direct marketing directly markets products/services to buyers. An effective direct marketing strategy will increase your return on investment (ROI) by marketing to your customer base. Therefore, you are not wasting money sending advertisements to homes that are not likely to buy your product.
Every Door Direct Mail (EDDM) is an effective direct marketing strategy. Direct mail targets and sends mail to areas where current and potential customers live. As a business owner, you should know who your typical buyer is (i.e. their age, income, education level, etc.). For example, a store that sells school supplies sends advertisements to neighborhoods filled with school-age children.
Direct marketing strategies with physical media (like direct mail) actually has a higher response rate than digital media. The average response rate of direct mail is 1.1-1.4%. In contrast, the average response rate for email is only 0.03%. Why? Physical media like direct mail is more memorable – a physical piece of mail that you can hold is more stimulating than an email. Furthermore, most people check their mailbox and go through physical mail on a daily basis. However, they do not always check their email – or open every email that they recieve.

Direct Marketing Results
The results of direct marketing strategies can be measured by the changes seen in Return on Investment (ROI).
You are likely to seen an increase in ROI because direct mail targets current and potential buyers. This means that you are not going to be wasting money by marketing to people that have little to no interest in your product. Furthermore, direct mail will reduce the cost of gaining new customers and keeping existing ones.
However, the change in ROI will depend on your industry. The type of product/services that you are selling will affect your profit – You must take the cost of production (and deals that you are offering) into consideration when calculating ROI.
